Large order for 9 people tonight and received some of the best fish and chips going round. great quality great price. everyone was more than happy. definitely one of the better shops.

My housemate and i ordered red emperor and chips - the fish alone came to $32 for two tiny pieces! apparently they were 150 grams each but i'd question if they were even that.
good quality food but overpriced.

We have eaten from the old trout about 7 times and the food is always fresh and tasty...no complaints there. just be careful with your order. when we order one serve of fish and chips to take away we get two pieces of fish and an amount of chips as per their menu. if we order two serves to take away (which they combine) we get three pieces of fish and only a few more chips. (ie 25% less fish and at least 33% less chips then we would expect if the orders were separate) one time we ordered 4 serves, 4 dim sims and some other stuff and when we got to our destination there was only 4 pieces of fish and 3 dim sims. it seems whenever we combine multiple serves we get a lot less than if we order the same number of serves separately and this happened every time. if we complain they are quick to fix it but come on on guys every time??. we got so annoyed after their last effort we have never been back. sure they think they are clever short-changing their customers but they dont realise the amount of business they have lost as a result...we are not stupid. we used to go there monthly and spend between $35 - $80'ish per visit so they have lost about $500-$750 per annum just from us.

My mother in law, recommended the old trout when it first opened. i'm not a fan of fish and chips but i thought id give it a go. well it was flammin fantastic !! i tell everyone about it and how good it is. im glad i moved away from the area as i was giving up my home cooking to go to the old trout. the owner is lovely and the the food has always been delish !! keep up the great work !!

What rubbish you must be a friend of a competitor with a chip shop everyone knows that the old trout is the cleanest freshest fish and chip shop - it is cooked in front of you. these guys have the best homemade takeway food around and that is why i hate these forums because just because some git makes a negative critisism people might believe it . and sorry yep prices have to go up - that's life work it out and anyway you aren't being forced to buy your takeaway. hey have you heard of mcdonalds i think that would suit you way better cheap and cheerful leave the quality food for people who appreciate it.

Dropping standards

On recent visit to the old trout, yet again we found the service to be excellent, but the food to be rather dissaponting. the fish and chip were very greasy, so much so that the chips sat in a puddle of oil in the paper wrapper. the standard has dropped markedly. we also found the prices has jumped to a point where the old trout is no longer considered good value for money.

Unlike many other fish and chip shops in perth i find that every time i open the door to the old trout i could could match the cleanliness the same as my own kitchen. i think they do very well in managing the heavy flow of customers with a the small sized cooking area. all the staff a very friendly and there is a good variety of foods in the shop from the legendary fish and chips to quality takeaway meals and the scrumptious sticky date pudding. i would happily recommend this shop to anyone. i have been a satisfied customer for 4 years now and the place only seems to get busier every week.

When this establishment opened the food was second to none. i can't say that anymore. the last 4 times we've been been very unhappy with the quality. chips were old and hard and i felt like we had the dregs. the fish was minimal - very thin and not much for the price. the curries and lasagna are very nice and convenient. can't say much about the dahl - tasted very strange both times. owner is very friendly and service is good.

The old trout is, quite simply, just what we needed - and need more of - in bassendean. the council has opened up old perth rd and made some redevelopments to try and revitalise the centre of bassendean. i think the idea is to one day be a bit like leederville and other cool old suburbs.
to complete the picture, we needed simple, fresh and inexpensive restaurants serving good food. the old trout is one of the first crop of new businesses in the area, being a year or so old, and it fulfills these requirements perfectly.
it's not gourmet, it's fish and chips, but it's bloody good fish and chips at a good price served by a friendly, mostly young crew. the uniforms look good and fit well with the image and, while being a small take-away shop and not a sit-down restaurant - the decor and atmosphere leave you feeling comfortable for the short time you're in there.

Healthy options and fresh fish. i'm not a big fan of fish and chips or f&c shops but this place really is the best i've ever been to.
the help is also very efficient and friendly, something you just don't see often anymore.
